Listen to the story

Democrats have continued to win seats in the U.S. House of Representatives after the 2026 midterm elections. Meanwhile, Republicans have started blaming each other for what is being called a rout, meaning a very heavy defeat.

Analysts have pointed to five possible reasons for the Republicans' poor performance, although the exact details have not all been reported yet. The results show that Democrats gained strongly in the House, which is one of the two chambers in the U.S. Congress.

The outcome of the midterms is also being discussed outside the United States. In India, some commentators believe the results may not change much in terms of bilateral ties, or the relationship between the two countries. However, the elections could affect India's room to manoeuvre in global politics, or how freely India can make decisions on the world stage.

Midterm elections happen every two years in the United States, between presidential elections. They allow voters to choose new members for the House and some members of the Senate. These elections often act as a judgement on the current president's performance.

After such a clear rout, it is common for the losing party to begin an internal debate about what went wrong. This process, sometimes called a 'blame game', often includes disagreements over strategy, leadership and messaging.

As Democrats continue adding to their House wins, Republican leaders are expected to face pressure to explain the losses and to adjust their approach before future elections.
