Listen to the story

Clocks across the United States will soon be set back one hour as daylight saving time comes to an end for the year. The change usually happens in early November and affects most states, including Michigan.

When clocks fall back, people get an extra hour of sleep. However, it also means it will get dark earlier in the evenings. Mornings, on the other hand, will be brighter for a while.

This year, the clock change happens around the same time as Halloween, which falls on October 31. According to reports, this kind of overlap is rare and will not happen again soon.

Daylight saving time was first introduced to make better use of natural daylight during the longer days of the year. Clocks are moved forward by one hour in spring and set back again in autumn.

Not every device changes automatically. While most smartphones and computers update the time on their own, clocks in cars, on walls, and on some older devices often need to be changed by hand.

Health experts often remind people that the time shift can disrupt sleep patterns. Going to bed slightly earlier in the days before the change may help the body adjust more easily.

The debate over whether to keep daylight saving time permanently continues in the U.S. Some lawmakers have pushed for a permanent change, though no final decision has been made.
