Clashes in Italian Cities During Protests Over Middle East War
Listen to the story
Large protests took place across Italy on 25 October 2026, linked to the war in the Middle East. Several cities saw tension between demonstrators and police.
Authorities placed cities under tight security, a situation often called a lockdown, in an attempt to keep the marches peaceful. Despite this, violent clashes broke out in Turin, Rome, and Bologna.
In Bologna, police used water cannons and tear gas to control crowds, and several bins were set on fire. A member of the Carabinieri, Italy's military police force, was injured but was helped by colleagues.
In Milan, police detained a person described as the "mind" behind planned disorder on 17 October. Details about the exact nature of that planned event were not given.
Across the country, police identified around 5,000 people during the protests, a process used to record who was present. In addition, 371 people were formally detained, including 110 minors, meaning people under the legal adult age.
The events were still developing at the time of reporting, as part of wider tensions connected to the ongoing war in the Middle East.
