On Tuesday, South Korea said eating and selling dog meat is not allowed.
Many people care about animals and like this new law. In the past, people ate dog meat to stay strong in the summer. But now, people think dogs are family and don't want to kill them for meat. More families in South Korea have pet dogs now, 25% in 2022.
The president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, also loves animals.
Many government people voted for the new law – 208 out of 210. Starting in 2027, people can’t eat or sell dogs for meat.
In 2027, if you sell dog meat, you might go to jail or have to pay money to the government.
Some companies that sell dog meat are worried about their business. They want money from the government. The government says it will help businesses as much as possible.
