Diesel Price Rises in Italy as Fuel Tax Discount Fails

0:00 / 0:00

Listen to the story

The price of diesel fuel in Italy has gone up. It is now above 2.19 euros for one litre.

There is a rule in Italy. It says diesel should not cost more than 2.19 euros a litre. This is called a price cap.

When the price goes above the cap, the government can lower a fuel tax. This tax is called accise in Italian. A lower tax makes the price go down again.

This time, the tax discount did not start. People call it a mobile discount because it can move up or down.

There was no new decree from the government. A decree is a special rule from the government.

Because of this, the price went up. The energy company Eni now sells diesel at 2.25 euros a litre.

Diesel is used in many cars and trucks in Italy. Higher prices mean people must pay more money for fuel.

This also makes transport more expensive. Companies may need to pay more to move goods.
