NASA is facing new problems with its Artemis 2 moon mission.
Engineers recently tested the fueling process for the large Space Launch System rocket (SLS). At first, the test seemed successful. However, the team later discovered a problem with the helium flow in the top part of the rocket. This is a major disappointment for the space agency.
Artemis 2 is an important mission. It will carry three Americans and one Canadian around the moon. This is the first time humans will fly near the moon since the Apollo missions ended in 1972. Originally, NASA planned to launch the rocket in February. They moved the date to March after finding a hydrogen leak.
Now, because of the helium problem, the launch will probably change to April.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said that the team must move the rocket back to the Vehicle Assembly Building. This building is where experts can safely fix the technical problems.
Because of this delay, the four astronauts have left their medical quarantine in Houston. They will wait in Houston until a new launch date is chosen.
The goal of the Artemis program is to build a permanent home on the moon’s south pole. Scientists hope to find water ice there. This ice could provide water to drink and air to breathe. It could also be used to make rocket fuel.
Artemis 2 is a 10-day trip to test all the equipment before a future moon landing. The crew will not land on the moon this time, but they will travel further into space than any humans have gone before.
NASA hopes this mission will also help humans get to Mars
