In its first weekend in cinemas, Thor: Love and Thunder earned $302 million USD globally. The gods must be happy with this success!
Variety reported that Thor: Love and Thunder earned $143 million USD in North America and $159 million USD internationally.
The newest MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movie was expected to earn $150 million in its first weekend in North America. However, it still earned more than the $123 million that Thor: Ragnarok collected in 2017.
The newest Thor movie is also behind Jurassic World: Dominion’s $145 million and the MCU’s other movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ $185 million. Doctor Strange has had the biggest opening weekend for a movie in 2022.
Thor: Love and Thunder cost $250 million to make. Marvel also spent around $100 million to promote the movie, so Marvel is probably happy with the earnings. Of all of the MCU movies (28 of them), Thor: Love and Thunder had the 12th best opening weekend.
IGN’s review of Thor: Love and Thunder says that the movie is cookie-cutter and the supporting characters don’t have good stories. On the other hand, the movie is a good romantic comedy, MCU’s first of that genre. The review says that Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman have great chemistry.
Second place at the cinemas last weekend was Minions: The Rise of Gru. It earned $45.5 million in its second weekend. This is the 5th movie in the Despicable Me franchise and it has earned $210 million domestically and almost $400 million internationally.
Top Gun: Maverick was third place last weekend. It earned $15.5 million in its 7th weekend. The second Top Gun movie has earned almost $600 million domestically and more than $1 billion internationally.
Elvis was the fourth place movie last weekend. It earned $11 million, a 40% decrease from its first weekend. So far, Elvis has earned around $91 million in North America.
And finally, 5th place was Jurassic World: Dominion. It earned $8.4 million domestically. It has now earned more than $350 million in North America.
