Breaking News in Easy English: How to Read Today’s News as a Learner
Updated Jan 16, 2023
What Is Breaking News?
Breaking news is when something important is happening “right now” and someone is also reporting on it “right now.” This could be something like a big accident, natural disasters, important changes in politics, or other things that don’t normally happen. Breaking news is usually on TV and radio, and also on the internet and social media. It is considered to be the most current and up-to-date information available at the time of reporting.
Understanding Breaking News Basics
The first step in understanding breaking news is to know where it's coming from. Is it from a good news source or some random person on the internet? Once you know this, read or listen to the story carefully and pay attention to what is being reported. Try to understand where it’s happening, why it's happening, and how it will affect you and other people. Breaking news changes fast, so check for updates and new information often.
Put it into practice
The best exercise is a real story at your level — graded text, audio, vocabulary and a quiz.
